Bull Riding in Coffeyville - August 15, 2012
Two Codys top the leaderboard
The inaugural night of bull riding at the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo in Coffeyville kicked off with lots of bulls, buck-offs, and cowboys.
At the end of the performance, two bull riders tied for the lead.
Cody Teel, currently ranked number one in the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association bull riding standings, continued his streak of winning with an 82 point score on the Beutler and Son Rodeo bull Breaking News. The Kountze, Texas cowboy is only in his second year of PRCA competition, and he’s riding the wave of being the top man in his event. “It feels good, to be sitting (number one) this time of year. I try not to think about it too much. I try to stay consistent and keep going.”
Teel, who is twenty years old, had never competed in Coffeyville till Tuesday night, but the rodeo was an opportunity that he couldn’t miss. “They upped the added money here,” he explained. “It’s $9,000, so it’s kind of hard to stay away. It ought to pay really good.”
Another cowboy named Cody tied for the leaderboard in Coffeyville.
Cody Campbell scored 82 points on the D&H Cattle Co. bull 101U. The 25 year old cowboy lived in Summerville, Ore., till a few months ago, when he and his wife Amanda moved to Eufaula, Okla., to be more centrally located for travel to rodeos.
This is Campbell’s first year in PRCA competition. He has been a Pro Bull Riders contestant for the past seven years, competing at the Built Ford Tough Series Finals the past three years and finishing each of those years in the top 25 in the world. He still competes at PBR events, but would like to qualify for the PRCA’s world championship, the National Finals Rodeo, before his career is over. Switching from PBR events to rodeos has been a welcome change for him. “Rodeos are a lot different change of pace for me,” he said. “I’ve been really enjoying them. They’re more laid back.”
But wherever it is, Campbell doesn’t care. “I just like riding bulls. I don’t care where it’s at.”
Three other bull riders made qualified rides in Coffeyville. Trey Benton III, Rock Island, Texas, scored an 81; Shawn Coleman, Springfield, S.D., was 79, and John Young, Orient, Iowa, was 76.
Bull riding, plus the other rodeo events, continues August 15-18. Tomorrow’s activities include the third annual Buddy Barrow show, the Phelp’s Hog Heaven Bean Feed and the Community National Bank Watermelon Feed, all of which are free to the public. A full schedule of events can be found here.
