Ranch Rodeo Takes Place at the Inter-State Fair in Coffeyville

A ranch rodeo team punched their ticket to Amarillo, Texas for the Working Ranch Cowboys Association Finals.

The 4L/C Bar Team, made up of members of two ranches near Latham, Kansas, won the average at the Ranch Rodeo at the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo in Coffeyville on Monday night.

The team, made up of Jason and Mickey Dierks, Gene Calvin, Junior Calvin, Justin Lawson, and Lee Hart, competed for the first time in Coffeyville.

Husband and wife Jason and Mickey Dierks own the 4L ranch, and brothers Gene Calvin and Junior Calvin own the C Bar Cattle Co.

For Jason, it’s his first year back to competition in the WRCA after being out for nine years. He enjoys his teammates and loves traveling with his family. He and Mickey have twin sons, Luke and Sage, who are eleven. The boys were part of the reason that Jason came back to the sport. “My boys are old enough to travel, and if I go, I want to go with guys I want to be around.”

Jason has competed at the WRCA Finals before, as have Gene and Lee. Lee has won the association’s top individual award, the Top Hand award, before. For Mickey and Justin, it will be their first time to Amarillo.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Jason said. “We’re going as a bunch of guys who get along. It’s almost like a vacation. We’ll have to leave a lot of work at home, but it’s worth it.”

Five more nights of the 2012 Inter-State Fair and Rodeo continue Tuesday-Saturday. August 14 is PRCA bull riding, and PRCA rodeo takes place August 15-18. For a complete schedule on the fair and rodeo click here or call the Chamber office at 620.251.2550.
