Oklahoma Youth Wins Top Honors

Cooper Allen showed the grand champion market swine at the 2012 Inter-State Fair and Rodeo in Coffeyville.

The 17 year old Nowata girl showed her Hampshire, a 230 lb. pig named Kitty, during the show on Wednesday, August 15. This is her fourth year of showing pigs, and her favorite part is the competition and the rush of wanting to win.

She will be a senior at Oklahoma Union High School this fall. Lunch is her favorite time of the school day, because she gets to socialize with friends. She doesn’t mind biology class, because “it’s easy to understand why you’re studying it.” Math classes are far down her list: “I don’t like algebra because it’s pointless. And calculus is too much.”

After high school graduation, Cooper will attend Coffeyville Community College. She hopes to transfer to Oklahoma State University, where she may earn a degree in a veterinary related field.

The social aspect of the fair appeals to her. “I like the nighttime, when everyone comes out.” She is also enjoying the new ride at the fair and the funnel cakes.

She has an older brother, Cody. Cooper is the daughter of Kelly and Melissa Allen.
