Curtis Hewlitt doesn’t mind taking the leftovers, because, twice, those leftovers have won him grand champion.

The Independence youth won Grand Champion Sheep at the 2012 Inter-State Fair and Rodeo in Coffeyville, Kansas.

The family raises club lambs, and his sheep, number 226, wasn’t very desirable, so he didn’t sell. Curtis got him instead. “He was the leftover sheep that no one picked out,” he explained. “He was a little greener and he had what we call ‘ugly wool,’ wool that grows funky.” Those sheep can be deceiving, as number 226 was, but after they are sheared, they can be champion-material. In 2010, his sheep, which was another leftover, also won grand champion.

Hewlitt, who lives in Independence, graduated from Cherryvale High School this spring. He is a freshman at Coffeyville Community College. He plans on earning a degree in agricultural business at Kansas State University or Oklahoma State University. He likes to hunt “anything that flies,” he says, and his favorite parts of the Inter-State Fair are the rodeo and the turkey legs.

He is the son of Ed and Connie Hewlitt.

Judge for the show was Jerry Suderman, Hillsboro, Kan. Complete show results follow.
