Pressure Cooker Rodeo Ride - August 17, 2012

Justin McDaniel likes pressure.

The 2008 World Champion Bareback Rider was at the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo in Coffeyville, and he’s under pressure, but it’s a good thing.

He’s only about $6100 out of the top 15 in the world standings, and he knows he has to be in that coveted fifteen when September 30 rolls around, or he’s not headed back to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

His trip to Coffeyville might have eased the pressure a bit.

He made an 81 point ride on the Beutler and Son horse Painted Flower to tie for the lead in the bareback riding.

The Porum, Okla. cowboy thought his ride could have been better, though. “I’ve been having trouble with my rigging. My hand didn’t feel very good tonight. I felt I could have rode her a lot better.” With a brand new glove and pad, his rigging slipped a little. “No excuses,” he said, “but it could have been better if I’d have had my equipment right. I’m going to work on my stuff tonight and get it all right.”

McDaniel isn’t wasting any time. He’s entered in thirty rodeos in the next six weeks, trying to move into the qualifying fifteen who go on to compete for a world title in Las Vegas. “I like pressure,” he said. “It makes it fun, make is exciting. I made the Finals a couple of times in this same situation, so I just have to keep the faith. I have nothing to lose, so I lay it on the line every time.”

Other event top scores and fast times from Thursday night include Tyler Harris and Rodney Burks, steer wrestling (5.1), Bryson Sechrist, steer wrestling (8.3), Tol Cawley, saddle bronc riding (77), Jesse Stipes and Billie Saebens, team roping (5.7), Marty Jones, steer roping (11.2) Sally Young, barrel racing (17.78), and Ty Redman, bull riding, (74).

The third night of rodeo action takes place on Friday, August 17. Fair activities tomorrow include the bucket calf show, judging of market steers, beef breeding, and showmanship. For a complete list of Inter-State Fair and Rodeo activities, click here.
