Coffeyville Serves as Springboard for Cowboy - August 21, 2012

Win at Inter-State Fair and Rodeo moves Texas man into top world standings

Coffeyville, Kansas helped Caine Riddle advance his rodeo career.

The Vernon, Texas cowboy won the bareback riding at the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo on Saturday night, and his 85 point ride helped advance him into the most desirable place to be for a cowboy in mid-August: the top fifteen in his event, in the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association standings.

That’s because those top 15 cowboys will compete for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the PRCA’s world championship in December, and right now, Riddle is among them.

And he’s pumped. He’s coming off a win at Lawton, Okla. last weekend. “Every little bit counts,” he said, referring to the money he’s won. “We’re getting close to crunch time.”

The 29 year old cowboy has been a PRCA member for nine years, but he still gets nervous in the chutes. “There’s no telling how many of these (bucking horses) I’ve been on this year, and that’s one thing that drives you. When you get on one that bucks, every time you’re nervous till you nod your head and everything goes away.”

If he stays among the top 15 bareback riders in the standings, this will be his first trip to the Wrangler NFR. But he’s not looking ahead too far. “I’m not thinking about it. Tomorrow I have Roly Poly (another bucking horse) in Denton (Texas), and after I get done with him, I’m ready to go to the next one.”

The saddle bronc riding title went to a cowboy who is a twenty-five year veteran of rodeo.

Geary, Oklahoma resident Bobby Griswold scored 85 points on Last Chances to win the title, and if he meets his goals in the next few months, he may retire. After competing nearly every year of his career in a circuit finals rodeo, and making the Wrangler NFR four times (1999, 2004, 2006 and 2008), he’s close to calling it quits. “My wife has been after me for ten years to retire. This year, my goals are to win the Prairie Circuit (year-end title) or at least win the circuit finals, and go to Oklahoma City to the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. At that point, I can hang my saddle up and be dad.”

His daughters, ages 12, seven and four, are beginning their rodeo competition. “My girls have a junior rodeo finals and my oldest is fixing to win her first all-around saddle. She said, ‘Dad, I really need you there.’ I want to be with my girls, be dad.”

The tie-down roping average title went to Apache, Oklahoma cowboy Bryson Sechrist. He tied two calves in a time of 18.1 seconds.

Sechrist, who is twenty, is a sophomore at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus. He is ranked second in the PRCA’s Rookie standings. He used to compete at the collegiate level, but now does pro rodeo only. In college rodeo, he explained, “you’re there to have fun. There’s money in it, but barely enough to pay for your diesel.” He’ll finish his college degree, “in case rodeo doesn’t work out,” but for now, rodeo is working out.

Three bull riders tied for first place with scores of 82 points. Cody Teel, the number one man in the PRCA standings, as well as Cody Campbell, and Nick Franchett, all scored 82 points to win the title. Ryan Mims won the steer wrestling average (8.3 seconds on two runs), and team ropers Quincy Kueckelhan and Jake Pianalto won the team roping average (11.8 seconds on two runs). Steer roper Mike Chase took his event title (27.8 seconds on two), and barrel racer Jean Winters won her event (17.55 seconds.)
